Getting Started

How to Use a Nebulizer

From prescription to relief in four straightforward steps.

1

Get Your Prescription

Your doctor prescribes liquid medication (albuterol, Duoneb, etc.). Our RT can coordinate with your physician if needed.

2

Fill the Medication Cup

Add the prescribed dose and saline (if directed) to the nebulizer cup. Do not mix medications unless your physician approves.

3

Inhale the Mist

Attach the mask or mouthpiece, power on, and breathe slowly through your mouth for 10โ€“20 minutes until the cup is empty.

4

Clean After Each Use

Rinse cup, mask, and mouthpiece with warm water. Air dry completely. Disinfect weekly with a vinegar/water soak.

Common Questions

Nebulizer FAQ

Answered by our licensed RT team.

โ–ผ
A nebulizer converts liquid medication into a fine mist inhaled directly into the lungs. They deliver albuterol, Duoneb, Pulmicort, hypertonic saline, Tobramycin, and Brovana for treatment of asthma, COPD, bronchitis, and cystic fibrosis. Nebulizers are especially effective for children, elderly patients, and anyone who has difficulty using pressurized inhalers.
โ–ผ
The Aura-LT compressor nebulizer is compatible with albuterol (Proventil, AccuNeb), Duoneb, Pulmicort (budesonide), hypertonic saline, Tobramycin, Brovana, and ipratropium. The portable mesh nebulizer works with most liquid medications; confirm inhaled steroid compatibility with your physician. Our RT is available to review your medication list โ€” call 706-772-0263.
โ–ผ
The nebulizer machine itself does not typically require a prescription. However, the liquid medications used inside (albuterol, Duoneb, Pulmicort, etc.) require a valid prescription. My Respiratory Company is a licensed DME provider and our on-staff RT can help coordinate with your doctor for new or updated medication prescriptions.
โ–ผ
Yes. Nebulizer machines and supplies (masks, tubing, medication cups) are FSA/HSA-eligible. Use your card at checkout at myrespco.com. If your FSA administrator requires a Letter of Medical Necessity, our licensed RT can provide one โ€” call 706-772-0263.
โ–ผ
A compressor nebulizer uses compressed air and AC power, handles the widest range of medications including inhaled steroids, and is ideal for home daily therapy (10โ€“20 min treatment). A portable mesh nebulizer runs on battery or USB, is near-silent, and reduces treatment time to 5โ€“10 minutes โ€” ideal for travel, work, or emergency rescue. Both are $50 at My Respiratory Company.
โ–ผ
Compressor nebulizer: 10โ€“20 minutes (typically 3โ€“5 mL medication volume). Portable mesh nebulizer: 5โ€“10 minutes. Breathe slowly and deeply through your mouth throughout. Continue until the cup is empty or mist stops.
โ–ผ
After every treatment: rinse cup, mask/mouthpiece with warm water, air dry. Daily: wash with mild soap, rinse, air dry. Weekly: soak in 1:1 white vinegar/water 30 minutes, rinse, air dry. Replace the air filter monthly and nebulizer cup every 6 months.
โ–ผ
Inhalers are portable and fast for mild-to-moderate control. Nebulizers are preferred for children under 5, elderly patients, severe flare-ups, or medications not available in inhaler form. Many patients use both. Our licensed RT can help determine the best approach for your specific diagnosis.
โ–ผ
Yes. Affirm buy-now-pay-later financing is available at checkout. Split your purchase into easy monthly payments with quick soft-credit approval. No insurance authorization required. FSA/HSA can also be used at checkout.
